Regional Bioeconomy Hub Plovdiv is responsible for a key part of the HUBS4BUILD project and will prepare the transfer of European solutions to the region
The European project HUBS4BUILD – “Regional Circularity Hubs for a Bio-based and Resilient Built Environment” has been launched. It will establish a network of regional hubs in 13 countries to develop, implement and disseminate circular solutions connecting the bioeconomy and construction sectors. The project is funded under Horizon Europe, will run for 48 months and brings together 39 organisations. Its main objective is to develop a workable model through which underutilised local resources and waste can be transformed into higher-value, low-carbon products.
Regional Bioeconomy Hub Plovdiv has a leading role in the project. Its task is to facilitate the transfer of already developed and tested circular solutions to new regions, adapt them to local conditions, prepare them for future implementation, and support the development of new circular value chains in the Plovdiv region.
What will happen specifically in the region?
In Plovdiv, a model for producing bio-based insulation from waste sheep wool, developed and tested in Romania, will be adapted. The work includes securing local raw materials, adapting the treatment technology, involving regional stakeholders and exploring the potential for future local production.
Specific objectives for Bulgaria include securing waste sheep wool, establishing a new circular value chain, developing concepts for regenerative agriculture, engaging regional stakeholders and preparing a feasibility study for a local production facility. In addition, approaches for more efficient water use and for returning nutrients and carbon to agricultural systems will be explored and applied in Plovdiv.
This will create a concrete basis for future production, new partnerships between farmers, businesses and research organisations, and the development of local circular solutions based on the region’s own resources.
From European Solutions to Regional Opportunities
HUBS4BUILD is designed to ensure that successful solutions do not remain isolated in individual regions. Through knowledge exchange, partnerships and the development of transfer models, they can be adapted and applied in new territories. At European level, the project will develop and test nine bio-based construction products, engage around 500 stakeholders, operate across 13 regional environments, aim to valorise around 700 tonnes of waste, and train 200 professionals. Regional Bioeconomy Hub Plovdiv will work to turn European developments into concrete regional opportunities for farmers, businesses, research organisations and the local economy.
